01 Jun Now More Than Ever
Now more than ever I realize the importance of:
1) having multiple streams of income
2) being able to earn money from anywhere in the world
3) having a full-time business I can call my own
4) not believing that tomorrow is promised
In just a matter of three months, the world- including the working world as we know it has changed- and will never be the same again. Many jobs have now gone online in at least some capacity. Those companies that weren’t prepared in advance are scrambling to do so, and those that are unable to accommodate working remotely or survive doing so have either temporarily or permanently ceased to operate. And in each of these scenarios, as with most when working for someone else, employees and contracted workers have little to absolutely no say or control.
Fortunately, I still have my job. But this pandemic has reiterated what I’ve known for quite some time:
Having Multiple Streams of Income Is an Absolute Necessity
Putting all your eggs in one basket can lead to detrimental consequences, no matter what the state of the economy is. Whether it’s due to health, personal, or other reasons, losing your job can happen in an instant, and having one income offers little to no insurance against devastating loss. Aside from the obvious income benefits, having multiple streams of income helps ensure:
- you have flexibility in choosing and determine whether or not to continue on any job/project
- you’re better able to handle an emergency or crisis situation
- you can invest and diversify financially and career-wise
- you work smarter and not necessarily harder
Being Able to Earn Money from Anywhere Is just Plain Smart
As many companies and individuals alike have quickly realized, the ability to make money from anywhere is essential. For many industries and professions, gone are the days of profitability and success meaning being bound daily- or at all- to an office, desk or even a physical location. With offices, companies, and even the borders to countries now being closed, failure to earn money from any location can mean the difference between success and failure.
I know I personally don’t want to deal with overhead like rent, property taxes and insurance, utilities, etc., which is why all my business interests are digitally based. Keeping expenses like these low to non-existent will allow me to save money and spend more on things like technology and software, and allow me to reinvest in my business.
Having a Full-Time Business Of My Own Is My Purpose
Having control over my destiny, income, and future is important to me. For now, I still have the blessing of my full-time income, but I need only to look to the local news, social media or even texts from friends and family to know that my fate can change within seconds and I’ll be ill prepared at this time to sustain myself while looking for work. I also know from past experience that there are few experiences that leave you more deflated and disappointed than being laid off or fired.
Many people want to have their own full-time business so they won’t have to answer to anyone or work as hard, but I know better. I know it’ll be the most rewarding thing I’ll ever do, while at the same time one of the hardest.
There’s No Guarantee There Will Be A Tomorrow
Over and over again I’ve banked on tomorrow being another chance to get started, to do a little bit better than the day before. But as we all definitely know for sure, tomorrow isn’t promised. Now is definitely the time for me to take action and work towards my dreams everyday. Now is the time to quit being fearful, lazy, procrastinating, making excuses, being comfortable, wasting time, waiting to be rescued. Now is the time to build.
For now I’m escaping the commute by default, but my ultimate goal is to escape it by choice and careful design. I hope you join me on this journey, and that you find hope and encouragement that you can do it too. Each week I’ll be documenting my escape and introducing you to ways that you can do the same.
