31 Mar Why I’m Escaping the Commute
I’m on a mission to escape the commute. After spending most of my life working traditional 9 to 5s in industries ranging from education to finance, I’m ready to become untethered!
Daily and weekly commutes, stressful quotas, pay inequalities, and the endless stream of “other duties as assigned” and caffeine just to stay awake through another meeting, for many is the picture of a traditional office job.
While traditional jobs certainly have their benefits for some, for others, myself included, they’re a recipe for burnout and missed opportunities. In addition, for a growing number of us, this model just doesn’t cut it anymore. We crave a work style that prioritizes both productivity and well-being and, dare I say, freedom.
The truth is, I’m ready to change my life, and if you’re reading this, there’s a pretty good chance that you are, too. For me, this isn’t just a fleeting desire; it’s a well-considered decision fueled by a multitude of factors that promise a positive impact on both my professional and personal life.
And the answer, for me, lies in remote work and entrepreneurship. Here’s why trading in my 9-to-5 for remote work is the key to unlocking a happier, more productive, and ultimately, more successful me.
Stress Less, Achieve More
The daily grind takes its toll. I’ve held a job consistently since I was 19, and my first real-world job was working in the high-stress world of finance, mutual funds, to be exact. Right after college graduation, I entered a 6-week paid training (the best onboarding and training I ever had in my career, by the way), it was do or die.
I had to pass my National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) Series 6 exam. I had just two chances to take the exam or find another job. Fortunately, I passed the first time, but this was just the first of many jobs that would initially seem so promising but ultimately drain my spirit.
The stress of the commute, rigid industry standards and work schedules, the pressure to constantly “be on,” and being one of just a few minorities all significantly impacted my impression of corporate America. I quickly began to question if this was what I really wanted to do for the rest of my life, and that feeling has never left me after all these years.
Flexibility is Freedom
Life happens. Appointments, errands, and unexpected challenges can all throw a wrench into the best-laid plans. Not to mention coupling life’s unforeseen challenges with having a child, marriage, divorce, and voila, you’re now caught in what we’ve all come to recognize as the daily grind. And day by day, you do what you have to to survive. A traditional office job often lacks the flexibility to accommodate these realities.
Imagine having the freedom to structure your workday around your natural rhythm. Why can’t I work a schedule that allows me to prepare a healthy breakfast, converse and spend time with my child, navigate traffic in peace, and still get my work done on time? Furthermore, working remotely unlocks the door to a better work-life balance. Whether attending a child’s school play or taking a midday fitness class, integrating personal needs into my workday fosters a sense of control and overall well-being.
Unleashing My Earning Potential:
Let’s face it—the cost of living is an increasing burden. And living in Texas isn’t the financial haven it used to be. According to Forbes, more than 9 million people moved to Texas between 2000 and 2022. Texas also more than doubled the rest of the nation’s population growth rate, at 16%. What does this mean for me? Skyrocketing rent, mortgage, and car insurance rates and overall rising inflation-with salaries that are seriously lagging behind these increases.
So, what’s a person to do? Think about it: no daily commute costs (which can add up quickly, especially in a city like Dallas!), I save money on gas, wear and tear on my car, and even food. Secondly, many remote jobs offer competitive salaries or even the flexibility to work for multiple clients, potentially increasing my overall earning potential. With the flexibility of a remote schedule, I can leverage my skills by taking on freelance projects in my field. This allows me to boost my income while still fulfilling my primary job responsibilities.
Financial freedom will allow me to invest in myself, whether it be through professional development courses, travel experiences, or simply the peace of mind that comes with having a financial safety net.
Wanderlust Calling
The world is a vast and beautiful place, and I yearn to explore it. Social media envy can be a positive thing, and I can’t help but to admit when it comes to travel I definitely long to visit a laundry list of places I see friends, influencers, celebrities and others visiting online. Yet, a traditional office job ties me to a specific location. Working remotely shatters these geographical limitations. Imagine being able to work from a bustling city in Europe one week, or a serene beach in the Caribbean the next, all while meeting deadlines and continuing to contribute to my team.
I don’t want this to be a pipe dream anymore. Technology and opportunities have advanced to the point where remote work is a reality for a growing number of professions. With the right tools and communication strategies, I can be a valuable asset to my team regardless of my physical location.
The ability to travel while working unlocks a world of possibilities, allowing me to broaden my horizons, immerse myself in different cultures, and gain invaluable life experiences that will undoubtedly enrich both my personal and professional life.
Imagine working with a stunning ocean view, exploring a new city during your lunch break, or even taking an extended trip without interrupting your workflow.
For someone who dreams of exploring the world, a remote work arrangement opens up a whole new realm of possibilities. I can finally ditch the rigid routine of vacation days and carve out a lifestyle that allows me to experience new cultures and broaden my horizons, all while remaining productive.
The Time is Now for Me
The landscape of work is rapidly changing. Companies are increasingly recognizing the benefits of remote work, with many embracing a workforce that is not centrally located.
This shift presents a unique opportunity for me to leverage my skills and experience in a way that maximizes my productivity and overall well-being. Furthermore, the skills needed for remote work, such as strong communication, time management, and self-motivation, are the same skills that will allow me to thrive in any professional setting.
Escape With Me
Working from home isn’t just about convenience; it’s about empowerment. It’s about creating a work environment that fosters focus, increases productivity, and allows me to achieve a healthy work-life balance. It’s about having the flexibility to manage my time effectively and the freedom to explore the world while earning a living.
Ultimately, it’s about taking control of my professional journey and building a career path that aligns with my values and aspirations. The time for the traditional office grind is over. For me, the future of work lies in escaping my commute.
